A scribe said he was well “as long as my hand is whole,” and that evening his hand was cut off, for having trusted in his hand
They said of one of the pious that he had a neighbor, a skilled scribe, who made his living from the wages of his writing. He said to him one day, “How are your affairs?” He said to him, “Good, as long as my hand is whole.” That very evening his hand was cut off, and he did not write with it for the rest of his days. This was his punishment from G-d, for having trusted in his hand.
