Berachos 12a (Rif 6b)

When he bows he shows his fear before Hashem; when he straightens up he shows his trust that Hashem will do good to him in all his affairs

“When he bows, he bows at ‘Baruch,’ and when he straightens up, he straightens up at the Name.” And in the Gemara he challenges: But it is written, “Before My Name he was humbled,” and here we say that he straightens up at the Name! And he answers: Is it written, “in front of My Name”? Rather, “before My Name,” which means before he mentions the Name, that is, when he mentions “Baruch.” And the reason for bowing at “Baruch” and straightening up at the Name: because when he bows, he shows the dread and the fear that he has before Him; and when he straightens up, he shows the trust that he has in Him in all his affairs, that He will do good to him. And the one depends on the other: for whoever fears Hashem trusts in Him, as it says, “In the fear of Hashem there is strong security” (Mishlei 14:26).
