Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim

98:5

One should not think his request ought to be granted because he prayed with kavanah, but that HaKadosh Baruch Hu will grant it in His kindness

One should not think, “HaKadosh Baruch Hu ought to do what I ask, since I prayed with kavanah.” For on the contrary, this calls a person’s sins to mind (for because of it his deeds are examined, [as if] to say, “He is confident in his merits”). Rather, he should think that HaKadosh Baruch Hu will do it in His kindness. And he should say in his heart, “Who am I, poor and lowly, coming to ask of the King of the kings of kings, HaKadosh Baruch Hu, if not for the abundance of His kindness with which He deals with His creatures?”
