Introduction

All dealings should be in faith, like the farmer who casts his seed and trusts the Creator for the harvest

Even though there are people who must engage in some trade, the dealings must be in faith; and this is the beginning of a person’s judgment, as it says in the second perek of Shabbos (Shabbos 31a): Rav said: When a person is brought in for judgment, they say to him, “Did you deal in faith?” And this is based on what is found there: “The faith of your times” (Yeshayahu 33:6): “faith” is Seder Zeraim; and Tosafos wrote in the name of the Yerushalmi: because he has faith in the Life of the worlds, and sows. That is, he is not like those who engage in business and say, “My strength and the might of my hand, etc.” (Devarim 8:17); rather, one who sows casts his seeds, plows his land and covers them; there they are lost, spoil and rot, until Hashem has mercy on him, brings down dews and makes the wind blow; with song he reaps and carries his sheaves. That is why Zeraim is called faith. And so all dealings ought to be in faith: that he believe that what he buys or sells, borrows or lends, is like casting his seeds into the earth, and through the kindness of the Creator his desire will be fulfilled. And this is the meaning of “Did you deal in faith?”
