Parashah 25

It is not written that He satisfies every living thing with food, but with its desire: He gives each one what he asks for

Another explanation: “Behold, I will rain down bread for you from heaven” (Shemos 16:4). This is what is written, “You open Your hand and satisfy every living thing [with its] desire” (Tehillim 145:16). Come and see: the way of HaKadosh Baruch Hu is not like the way of flesh and blood. The way of flesh and blood: as long as the sponge is in his hand, [if] he opens his hand, not a drop comes down; [if] he closes his hand, he brings down water. But HaKadosh Baruch Hu is not so. The sponge is in His hand, as it says, “G-d’s stream is full of water” (Tehillim 65:10), and so, “Who measured the waters in the hollow of His hand” (Yeshayahu 40:12). If He holds back, the waters do not come down, as it says, “Behold, He holds back the waters, and they dry up” (Iyov 12:15), and it says, “And He will shut the heavens, and there will be no rain” (Devarim 11:17). [If] He opens His hand, the rain comes down, as it says, “Hashem will open for you His good storehouse” (Devarim 28:12). And it says, “You open Your hand and satisfy every living thing [with its] desire”: it is not written here, “every living thing [with] food,” but “every living thing [with its] desire,” for He gives each and every one his desire, what he asks for. And so in the time to come, HaKadosh Baruch Hu will give each and every one all that he asks for. And if you wonder at this, see what He did for Yisrael in this world: He brought down the man for them, which had in it every kind of flavor, and each one of Yisrael would taste whatever he wanted, for so it is written, “These forty years Hashem your G-d has been with you; you have not lacked a thing [davar]” (Devarim 2:7). What is “a thing [davar]”? When one wanted to eat something and said with his mouth, “If only I had a fattened bird to eat,” at once the taste of a fattened bird came into his mouth. They would say a word [davar], and HaKadosh Baruch Hu would do their will. Rabbi Abba said: He did not even say a word with his mouth; he only thought in his heart to say what his soul desired, and HaKadosh Baruch Hu would do his will, and he would taste the taste of what he desired.
