Shaar HaOsiyos, Emes V'Emunah
Of everything he means to do a person should say “im yirtzeh Hashem”; in business, “I trust in Hashem that through this means He will send me my needs”
Included in cleaving to emunah: a person should say of every act he wants to do, even in the near future, “I will do this, if Hashem wills [im yirtzeh Hashem],” whether it is a great thing or a small thing. And your sign: “It is the counsel of Hashem that will stand [hi sakum]” (Mishlei 19:21): היא [hi] is the initials of im yirtzeh Hashem, and then it will stand. And אי״ה [is the ayeh of] “Where [ayeh] is the place of His glory?” And so if he wants to do some business, such as to buy or to sell some merchandise, he should say, “I trust in Hashem, and hope that through this means Hashem will send me my food and my needs.” For will Hashem make windows in heaven (Melachim II 7:2) to send him down a sack full of coins? Rather, Hashem arranges [it] by His good will through nature; as our Rabbis said (Sifri, Re’eh 70): “And Hashem your G-d will bless you” (Devarim 15:18): one might think, even if he sits idle; the pasuk says, “that you do.” And he should trust that this business is the means through which Hashem sends him what is allotted to him; and so it is written in Chovos HaLevavos. And if he profited, he should say, “I profited with the help of Hashem,” as it is written, “And you shall know that Hashem is the One who gives you strength to make wealth” (Devarim 8:18).
