Shaarei Kedushah

Part 2, Shaar 4

There is no virtue like trust: one who trusts is assured of his food, and occupies himself with Torah and mitzvos with all his heart

And our Rabbis said: Desire takes a person out of the world (Avos 4:21); for it keeps him busy, away from the study of Torah and from keeping its mitzvos, and he denies providence, for he does not believe that everything is through the providence of Hashem. As [Chazal] said (Sotah 48b): Anyone who has bread in his basket and says, “What will I eat tomorrow?” is one of those of little faith; and of him it says, “For who has scorned the day of small things?” (Zecharyah 4:10). What caused the table of the tzaddikim to be scattered in the time to come? The smallness of faith that was in them.

But trust: there is no virtue like it, as it is written, “Fortunate are all who take refuge in Him” (Tehillim 2:12); for he believes that there is in the world a G-d who is able and who watches over [all]. And it is written, “Blessed is the man who trusts in Hashem, and Hashem will be his security” (Yirmiyahu 17:7). And he is assured that his food will not be lacking, as it is written, “Cast your burden on Hashem, and He will carry [it for] you” (Tehillim 55:23); on condition that it be in truth and with all his heart, without any wavering. And further, since he trusts in Hashem, he will occupy himself with Torah and mitzvos with all his heart, without any [worried] thought at all.
