Pray to the One to whom wealth belongs; the beasts and the birds are sustained without toil

Kiddushin, 82a, Mishnah

Talmud Bavli

Rabbi Meir says: A person should always teach his son a clean and easy trade, and pray to the One to whom wealth and possessions belong; for there is no trade that does not have poverty and wealth in it. Poverty does not come from the trade, and wealth does not come from the trade; rather, everything is according to his merit.

Rabbi Shimon ben Elazar says: Have you ever seen a beast or a bird that has a trade? Yet they are sustained without difficulty. And they were created only to serve me, while I was created to serve my Maker. Is it not right that I should be sustained without difficulty? But I have made my deeds bad, and so I have cut short my sustenance.
