Erech Bitachon, s.v. UMeInyan HaBitachon Shelo Yivtach BaAdam
The fear a person has of man is a sin for his soul and a trap; one who trusts in Hashem is lifted above the trouble in reward for his trust
And we find that the Torah warned [us] not to fear the nations; that is what is written, “When you go out to war against your enemies and see horse and chariot, a people more numerous than you, do not be afraid of them” (Devarim 20:1). And it is written, “Who is the man who is fearful and faint of heart? Let him go and return to his house” (Devarim 20:8): because the fear of the [enemy] people has overcome him, and he trembles when he sees how great their camps are. It may be that he truly believes that everything is in the hand of Hashem; but because he has not raised his soul to the level of bitachon, his heart is faint and his spirit is broken, and [the Torah] commanded that he turn back.
And this is what is written, “A person’s fear sets a trap [for him]” (Mishlei 29:25). It says: the fear with which he fears man is a sin for his soul; it sets a trap for him, strengthens the enemy against him, and brings the trouble near to him; for it is fitting for a person not to fear an arm of flesh and blood. “But one who trusts in Hashem will be made strong” (Mishlei 29:25): [lifted high] above the trouble, in reward for the trust, even though the trouble was fit to come upon him. And there is no doubt that fearing an arm of flesh and blood comes from lowliness of soul, and one who fears man forgets Hashem.
And so the prophet warns about the middah of bitachon, as it says, “Who are you, that you are afraid of a man who will die, of a human being who will be made like grass?” (Yeshayahu 51:12): that is, here today and in the grave tomorrow. “And you have forgotten Hashem your Maker, and you are in constant fear” (Yeshayahu 51:13): that is, when you see the trouble near and ready, and the plan for escaping it is beyond you. “And you are in constant fear all day long of the fury of the oppressor” (Yeshayahu 51:13): that is, you should have thought that many times such [trouble] found you, and Hashem saved you in His mercy; and so you should not fear the man who strikes, but Hashem.
And this is what is written after it, “I am Hashem your G-d, who stirs up the sea and its waves roar; Hashem, Master of Legions, is His Name” (Yeshayahu 51:15): that is, I am the One who storms the sea and quiets its roaring, all the more so the fury of the oppressor. And [the prophet] goes on to tell the lowliness of man: “The one who is bent over hastens to be opened, so that he will not die into the pit, and his bread will not be lacking” (Yeshayahu 51:14): that is, this is his way all the days of his life, in these two things, to eat and to relieve himself, so that he will not die into the pit; for if his bread is lacking he will die, and if he does not relieve himself he will die too, and in both of them he is quick by nature. That is why it mentions “hastens to be opened,” that is, to relieve himself. And you should recognize that the prophet mentioned this matter only to make trust in man repugnant in people’s eyes.
