Rishonim

One of the pious was amazed at a giver who asks to be thanked, and more at a receiver who humbles himself before the giver

Chovos HaLevavos, Shaar HaBitachon, ch. 4

Rabbeinu Bachya ibn Pakuda · Spain, 11th century

One of the pious said: I am amazed at one who gives his friend what the Creator decreed [the friend should receive] through him, and then reminds him of his kindness in it and wants him to thank him for it. And I am even more amazed at one who received his livelihood through another, who was compelled to give it to him, and [yet] humbles himself before him, tries to please him and praises him.
