[On “I hope for Your salvation, Hashem” (Bereishis 49:18):] Rabbi Yitzchak said: Everything is through hope. Suffering through hope, the sanctification of the Name through hope, the merit of the Avos through hope, the longing for the World to Come through hope. Suffering through hope, as it is written, “Even in the path of Your judgments” (Yeshayahu 26:8). “Hashem, we have hoped for You”: this is suffering. “For Your Name”: this is the sanctification of the Name. “And for Your remembrance”: this is the merit of the Avos. “The longing of the soul”: this is the longing for the World to Come. Grace through hope: “Hashem, be gracious to us; we have hoped for You” (Yeshayahu 33:2). Forgiveness through hope: “For forgiveness is with You” (Tehillim 130:4).1
