Parashah 68

Yaakov said, “Shall I lose my hope in my Creator? Heaven forbid! Rather, my help is from Hashem”

Rabbi Shmuel bar Nachman opened: “A song of ascents. I lift my eyes to the mountains [heharim]” (Tehillim 121:1): I lift my eyes to the parents [hahorim], to those who taught me and those who brought me into being. “From where will my help [ezri] come?” (ibid.): [Yaakov said:] Eliezer, when he went to bring Rivkah, what is written of him? “And the servant took ten camels, etc.” (Bereishis 24:10); and I, not one nose ring and not one bracelet! Rabbi Chanina said: [Yitzchak] sent him off stripped [of everything]. Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi said: He sent [wealth] with him, but Esav arose and took it from him. He went back and said: “Shall I lose my hope in my Creator? Heaven forbid! I will not lose my hope in my Creator!” Rather, “My help is from Hashem” (Tehillim 121:2). “He will not let your foot slip; your Guardian will not slumber. Behold, He does not slumber and does not sleep, etc.” (Tehillim 121:3–4). “Hashem will guard you from all evil” (Tehillim 121:7): from Esav and from Lavan. “He will guard your soul”: from the Angel of Death. “Hashem will guard your going out and your coming in” (Tehillim 121:8): “And Yaakov went out from Be’er Sheva” (Bereishis 28:10).
