A person’s sustenance is fixed from Rosh Hashanah; Hillel’s “Blessed is Hashem day by day”

Beitzah, 15b–16a

Talmud Bavli

Rav Tachlifa, the brother of Ravnai Chozaah, taught: All of a person’s sustenance is fixed for him from Rosh Hashanah until Yom Kippur, except for what he spends for Shabbos, what he spends for Yom Tov, and what he spends for his children’s Torah study: if he spends less [on these], they give him less, and if he spends more, they give him more.

It was taught [in a Baraisa]: They said of Shammai HaZakein that all his days he would eat in honor of Shabbos. If he found a fine animal, he would say, “This is for Shabbos.” If he found another finer than it, he would set aside the second [for Shabbos] and eat the first.

But Hillel HaZakein had a different middah, for all his deeds were for the sake of Heaven, as it says, “Blessed is Hashem day by day” (Tehillim 68:20). It was also taught so: Beis Shammai say: From the first day of your week, [prepare] for your Shabbos; and Beis Hillel say: “Blessed is Hashem day by day.”
